Explore bus routes →Transportation in Costa Rica: complete overview
Costa Rica is small on a map, but mountains, winding roads and connections can make a short distance a long travel day. Choose transport for the route you will actually take, not just the distance.
Start with your group size, luggage, arrival time and total budget. The five main choices are private shuttle, shared shuttle, public bus, rental car and domestic flight. You can mix them rather than commit to one for your whole trip.
Solo or a couple on a tighter budget
Start with a direct bus if its timetable works and your bags are easy to manage. A shared shuttle can be worth the extra cost when it avoids awkward connections.
Family or group traveling together
Compare the full private vehicle quote, including its passenger tier, with all shared seats plus transfers. Private can be more convenient, but four people is not a guaranteed savings threshold.
Suitcases, surfboards or child seats
Choose around confirmed capacity, not just seats. Give bag counts and dimensions and request child seats in advance; extra items may cost more or need approval.
Late arrival or a tight connection
Check your actual arrival buffer and the route-specific departure. A confirmed private ride or a night near the airport may be more practical than a shared departure you could miss.
Frequent outings or a long cross-country leg
Compare a rental car for repeated local exploring. For a long transfer, compare a flight only after adding baggage, check-in, airport transfers and any connections.
Decision guide · 7 situations
Which transportation is right for you?
Start with your group size, luggage, arrival time and budget — pick the situation closest to yours, then check the full details in the linked guide. Prices shown are real anchors from our own guides; always confirm the final total for your date and party.
A direct bus is the strongest budget choice when its timetable fits: short local rides run $1–5 and long-distance routes $6–15, with most cross-country trips around $10.
Add any taxi to the terminal and the onward leg to your accommodation before comparing with a shared-shuttle seat ($40–90 per person) — on a simple route, the saving is real.
Shared shuttle departure times differ on every route — there is no countrywide last departure, so the evening run you counted on may not exist for your destination. Check the last departure that works for your flight before assuming a shared seat.
A private transfer is confirmed for your group: send your flight number, and pickup is arranged around it. Price is per vehicle by passenger tier — for two people splitting one fare, the gap to shared seats shrinks.
One vehicle carries everyone together with the suitcases — and child seats can be requested in advance. Capacity is confirmed for your group, not hoped for.
Do the honest math: compare the private vehicle quote against every shared seat plus transfers. Private is usually the more convenient choice with kids, but four people is not a guaranteed savings threshold — on some routes the shared total wins.
You don't have to pick one mode for the whole trip. Take the bus where the route is direct and the timetable works ($1–15 per leg), and buy a shared-shuttle seat only for the awkward legs (from $69 per person on popular routes) — mountain hops and multi-connection days.
The mix keeps the difficult legs simple without paying private rates end to end.
A domestic flight can turn an all-day drive into a short hop — Sansa scheduled one-way fares run $115–156 on routes like SJO ↔ Quepos or SJO ↔ La Fortuna.
Compare the complete journey, not the flight time: transfers to and from each airstrip, check-in and security. And mind the 30 lb checked-bag limit — excess charges add up fast when traveling with gear.
On a private transfer the vehicle's cargo space is yours — boards and extra suitcases travel in the same booking, sized to the vehicle rather than a per-seat allowance.
Whichever mode you lean toward, declare every large item before booking: shared shuttles accept surfboards subject to space and possible charges, and domestic flights bill boards at $40 per way plus tax within strict limits.
Departure times vary by route and date — some shared services run into the evening, but there is no countrywide cutoff, so confirm the last departure that works for your flight on your exact route.
If it's gone, two solid plans remain: a confirmed private transfer (send your flight number and ask how delays are handled) or an overnight stay near the airport and a fresh morning departure — often the more restful option after a long flight.
Price anchors, verified from our guides: buses $1–15 per person per leg · shared shuttles from $69 per person on popular routes (tax-included card prices) · private transfers per vehicle by passenger tier (example: LIR airport → La Fortuna, $260) · Sansa one-way flights from $115. Compare the final total for your date and party — including tax, extras and connecting transfers — before booking.
Costa Rica transportation options at a glance
Private and shared shuttles
Private shuttles are exclusive to your group; pickup locations, times and extra stops depend on the confirmed route and booking. Shared shuttles sell seats on scheduled services using designated pickup and drop-off points, not door-to-door service.
Compare the actual shuttle routes and booking details. Check bag allowances, any extra charges and onward transport from the drop-off point.
Public buses
A public bus is a strong budget choice when the route and timetable fit. Transfers, terminal changes and transport to your accommodation can outweigh the saving on a more complicated trip.
Use our bus guide to plan terminals and connections; fares are per person, per leg.
Rental cars
A rental car can suit a trip with frequent local outings, flexible stops or accommodation away from transport routes. Include insurance, fuel, parking and the days it will sit unused in your comparison.
Our rental car guide explains booking through Adobe Rent a Car. Choose the vehicle for the specific access roads, not the season alone.
Domestic flights
A domestic flight can shorten a long journey when a suitable service exists. Compare the complete trip, including check-in, baggage, airport transfers and any connections, rather than flight time alone.
Check the domestic flight guide for routes and booking options. Not every pair of destinations has a direct flight.
Taxis, rideshare, and boats
Taxis can cover the gap between a terminal or shuttle meeting point and your accommodation. Confirm the fare or meter arrangement before setting off; app-based availability and pickup arrangements vary.
Boats and ferries can be part of the route, such as a crossing from Puntarenas to the Nicoya Peninsula or a van–boat–van transfer across Lake Arenal. Check the dock, baggage handling, connecting transport and whether vehicle and passenger tickets are separate.

Select a mode to compare its pricing unit, practical constraints and best-fit travelers. These are starting points, not promises about every route. Compare the final total for the same date and group, including tax and extras.
Private & shared shuttles
Choose a shuttle when avoiding the driving or simplifying connections is worth the extra cost. Compare the exact route and full group total rather than a national price range.
Private shuttles
A private transfer is for your group only. Confirm the actual pickup and drop-off addresses, departure time, passenger tier and luggage capacity before relying on it.
Shared shuttles
Shared shuttles use designated pickup and drop-off points. Budget for reaching those points and getting to your accommodation afterwards.
When a shuttle is the right call
A shuttle can make sense with children or several bags, or when the bus journey requires awkward connections. A direct bus can still be the better choice if its timetable and luggage arrangements suit you.
For an early or late trip, request a private transfer and wait for confirmation. Do not assume any requested time is automatically available.
Booking tips
Airport shuttles: SJO and LIR
Arriving at San José or Liberia? Start with the correct airport hub, then check the route, date, pickup instructions and full booking total.
- San José Airport (SJO) shuttles to Manuel Antonio, La Fortuna, Monteverde and more
- Liberia Airport (LIR) shuttles to Tamarindo, Papagayo, Monteverde and more
Public buses in Costa Rica
Buses are worth considering when keeping costs down matters more than convenience. A direct route can be a good fit; a chain of connections needs more planning.
How the bus system works
Bus services use different terminals and stops. Confirm the departure point, destination, ticket purchase method and whether your chosen service is direct or requires changes.
Do not assume the airport stop is the same as a downtown San José or Liberia terminal. Air conditioning, luggage storage and frequency vary by service.
What buses cost
Check the current fare for each leg rather than using a nationwide dollar estimate. Add any taxi to the terminal, onward connection and applicable baggage charge to your budget.
The honest trade-offs
With several suitcases, children or a tight arrival connection, changing terminals may be less practical than the ticket price suggests. Keep valuables with you and leave room for delays.
Plan with our complete bus guide.

Domestic flights in Costa Rica
Flying may help on a long leg, but a short flight is not the same as a short door-to-destination journey. Check whether the service runs on your date and whether a connection is needed.
When flying is worth it
Compare your accommodation-to-accommodation travel time. Include ground transfers, check-in, security, collecting baggage and any wait between flights. A nearby airstrip may still be some distance from your hotel.
Avoid tight international-to-domestic connections. Ask the airline about its check-in deadline, terminal arrangements and suitable connection margin for your booking.
Costs and what to expect
Fares are per person and flight leg and vary with date, route, availability and fare conditions. Check whether the quote includes tax and what bags or changes cost; there is no single reliable nationwide fare band.
SANSA baggage allowances depend on the fare. Oversized or excess baggage is subject to space and operational limits and may not travel on your flight. Check the official baggage policy before booking.

Renting a car in Costa Rica
A rental car is useful when you will explore regularly beyond your base. If it will spend most days parked, price an airport transfer and local transport instead.
What renting really costs
Compare the total for all rental days, not just the headline daily rate. Ask what insurance, tax, additional drivers and equipment are included; add fuel, parking, tolls and any one-way fee.
A deposit or card hold is different from the rental charge and still affects the credit available to you. Check the accepted card, deposit amount and cancellation terms in your quote. Adobe states that its rates include VAT; do not add tax twice.
Do you need a 4x4?
Ask your accommodation and rental company about the exact access road and current conditions. Ground clearance or a 4x4 may be appropriate on some routes, but neither is automatically needed for every mountain town or rainy-season trip.
Do not cross rivers or flooded roads in a rental car; ask for an alternative route. Read the rental restrictions and cancellation policy rather than assuming a reservation is refundable. Adobe lists exclusions and cancellation conditions in its official FAQ.
The honest pros and cons
You gain control over local outings and stops, but also take on driving, parking and vehicle collection and return. Compare the full rental total with all the transport you would otherwise buy; a group of four does not automatically save money.
Read our rental car guide and the driving guide linked below before deciding.

Transportation between Costa Rica destinations
Use the route links below to check the correct direction and departure point. Airport and downtown pickups are not interchangeable, and the reverse journey may have different schedules. Prices and availability depend on your travel date.
San José to Manuel Antonio / Quepos
Compare the airport or city pickup with a bus departure from downtown San José; include getting to that terminal and the final leg to your accommodation.
San José to La Fortuna / Arenal
Check the exact San José or SJO pickup and the La Fortuna drop-off. A bus alternative may involve a connection, so confirm all legs for your day.
San José to Monteverde
For Monteverde, confirm the final accommodation access with your host. Choose a rental vehicle based on that route, not a blanket assumption about unpaved roads.
San José to Puerto Viejo (Caribbean)
Puerto Viejo here means Puerto Viejo de Talamanca on the Caribbean coast. Check the drop-off for Cahuita or Puerto Viejo and leave room for a long road journey.
San José to Santa Teresa / Montezuma
For Santa Teresa or Montezuma, confirm which destination is included. Ask whether the chosen service uses a ferry and whether tickets and onward transport are included.
Liberia (LIR) to Tamarindo
LIR airport and Liberia town are different pickup locations. For a bus alternative, verify the airport stop and any connection rather than assuming a direct airport service.
Liberia (LIR) to Monteverde
Compare the transfer with all bus connections, then confirm the last stretch to your Monteverde accommodation.
Liberia (LIR) to La Fortuna / Arenal
Check the La Fortuna drop-off and any onward transport to a lodge outside town. A cheaper bus plan may involve several connections.
Manuel Antonio to Monteverde
A shuttle can simplify this cross-region trip. Compare any bus alternative leg by leg, including terminal changes and the final connection.
La Fortuna to Monteverde
For a van–boat–van transfer across Lake Arenal, confirm the itinerary, bag handling and the transfer at each shore. A road-only private service is a different product.
Monteverde to Santa Teresa
For this mountain-to-coast trip, confirm whether the booked route includes a ferry, tickets and vehicle changes. Declare boards or large bags before booking.
Transportation from Costa Rica airports
SJO is in Alajuela, serving the San José area; LIR is near Liberia in Guanacaste. Compare the complete arrival plan, including onward transport and the possibility of staying near the airport.
Which airport for which destination?
SJO can suit the Central Valley, Central Pacific and Caribbean side; LIR can suit Guanacaste and Papagayo. For places such as La Fortuna or the Nicoya Peninsula, compare both airports against your actual itinerary.
Remote destinations may require a road, boat or domestic-flight connection. Check the final leg to your accommodation, not only the nearest airport.
Shuttles from SJO and LIR: how pickup works
Allow time after landing for immigration, baggage, customs and reaching your confirmed meeting point. Queues and delays vary; ask what buffer is appropriate for your flight and selected departure.
Shared airport shuttles use the meeting point in your booking instructions, not one universal café. Check the last suitable departure for your route and date; there is no countrywide landing cutoff.
For a late arrival, compare a confirmed private transfer with an overnight stay nearby. Provide your flight number and ask how delays, waiting and rebooking are handled.
Other airport options
A taxi can be practical for a short transfer; confirm the pickup arrangement and fare before traveling. For a bus, check the actual airport stop, operating hours and onward terminal connection, especially with luggage.
Check onward routes from San José Airport (SJO) or Liberia Airport (LIR) before choosing your transfer.
How to choose the best transportation for your trip
Start with the situation guide near the top, then check your shortlisted options against the same itinerary. A cheap ticket that needs several paid connections may not be the cheapest whole journey.
Choose by your priority
Choose by your trip length
With one base, airport transport plus local outings may be enough. With several bases, compare every transfer leg; a car need not be rented for the entire stay.
On a longer trip, mixing buses, shuttles, a short rental and a flight may work better than choosing one mode throughout.
Timing and season matter
Leave space for road delays and connections, especially around holidays or heavy rain. For an arrival day, avoid planning a tight shuttle, ferry or domestic-flight connection based only on the scheduled landing time.
Combining transportation methods
Mixing modes can keep the difficult legs simple without paying for private transport throughout. Check the handover points and who is responsible for each connection.
Mixes that work well
Cross-border travel
For a trip toward Panama or Nicaragua, check the exact service description for vehicle changes, boats, border handovers and inclusions. Do not assume meals or border assistance are included. Verify entry requirements separately and budget for any charges not included in the booking.
How much does transportation cost in Costa Rica?
Use current route quotes, not a national fare range. Compare the full amount for your date and party, in the same currency, with the tax basis and extras clearly identified.
Typical costs at a glance
Compare an exact airport route
For a direction-specific comparison, see the shared SJO / San José to Manuel Antonio / Quepos ride and the private ride in the same direction. The shared base fare is per person; the private base fare is per vehicle at the selected passenger tier. Both list base fare plus 13% tax. Check the selected date, tier, extras and final total before booking.
Use the shuttle finder for other routes. Compare the private total with all shared seats plus transfers; there is no guaranteed saving at four passengers.
Where travelers overspend
Common budget surprises are getting to a shared meeting point, extra baggage, an out-of-zone private address, rental insurance or deposit requirements, and airport transfers around a domestic flight. Ask what is included before paying.
