Where is Manuel Antonio?
Manuel Antonio is located on Costa Rica's beautiful Central Pacific Coast, about 170 km (105 miles) southwest of San José. The area is famous for its stunning beaches, lush rainforest, and the world-renowned Manuel Antonio National Park, making it one of the country's most popular destinations.
One thing that confuses many first-time visitors is the difference between Quepos, Manuel Antonio, and Manuel Antonio National Park. Although they are closely connected, they are not the same place.

Just a 10-minute drive from Quepos, Manuel Antonio is the hillside beach community that stretches along the road leading to the national park. Manuel Antonio National Park
Located at the end of the main road, Manuel Antonio National Park is the region's most famous attraction. How many days do you need in Manuel Antonio?
1 day
If you're short on time, you can visit Manuel Antonio National Park and spend a few hours relaxing at one of the area's beautiful beaches. While you'll experience the destination's highlights, one day is not enough to fully appreciate everything the region has to offer.
2 days
With two days, you'll have time to explore Manuel Antonio National Park, relax on the beaches, and enjoy one additional activity such as a catamaran cruise, mangrove tour, surf lesson, or sunset dinner overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
3 days (recommended)
Three days is the ideal amount of time for most travelers. You'll have enough time to explore the national park, enjoy the beaches, spot wildlife, experience one or two adventure activities, and still have time to relax by the pool or watch one of Manuel Antonio's famous sunsets.
4-5 days
With four or five days, you can truly experience everything the area has to offer while traveling at a relaxed pace. You'll have time for day trips to nearby attractions like Los Campesinos or Nauyaca Waterfalls, additional wildlife tours, and plenty of beach time without feeling rushed.
Most visitors are surprised by how much there is to do beyond Manuel Antonio National Park. Between the beaches, wildlife experiences, water activities, nearby waterfalls, and rainforest adventures, it's easy to fill several days.
Our recommendation: We suggest spending at least three full days in Manuel Antonio & Quepos, which usually means staying 3 or 4 nights, depending on your arrival and departure times. This gives you enough time to enjoy the area's highlights without rushing from one activity to the next.

Tips for visiting Manuel Antonio & Quepos

A rental car is optional
The bus serves the main Quepos–Manuel Antonio road. Check the walk from your hotel to a stop, especially on steep roads, and confirm tour pickups separately.

Book Manuel Antonio National Park tickets in advance
The national park has daily visitor limits, and tickets often sell out during holidays and the high season.

Visit the National Park early
Arrive when the park opens for cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and your best chance of spotting wildlife like sloths, monkeys, toucans, and scarlet macaws.

Don't feed or touch the wildlife
Monkeys, raccoons, and coatis are used to visitors and may try to steal food or belongings. Keep your bags zipped, never feed the animals, and maintain a safe distance to protect both yourself and the wildlife.

Combine nearby activities to save time
Plan your day around the same area. For example, visit Manuel Antonio National Park, relax at the beach afterward, and finish the day with a sunset catamaran cruise or dinner overlooking the Pacific.
When to visit Manuel Antonio
January–March is the Central Pacific’s dry-season core; December and April are transition months. May–October is generally wetter, with September and October typically the rainiest. Rain often comes in the afternoon or early evening, but clear mornings are not guaranteed. Plan outdoor activities early where practical, leave room to reschedule and check local forecasts and activity conditions.

Things to do: Top Attractions in Manuel Antonio
Visiting the Manuel Antonio National Park
Manuel Antonio National Park was created in 1972 to preserve the bounty of the forest and the unspoiled beaches.
Despite being the smallest national park in Costa Rica, it is recognized for being one of the most biodiverse parks on earth, encompassing almost 683 land hectares and 55,000 marine hectares. It is the home for many at risk species in Costa Rica and one of the most popular places to see two and three toed sloths.
Manuel Antonio National Park is where the rainforest meets the ocean. The beaches are wide, extensive, and covered with beautiful, soft, white sand. One of the areas best qualities are the evergreen trees and palms that extend onto the beaches, providing protection from the sun and a welcome home for sloths and monkeys to enjoy the cool sea breeze.
For hikers, there are plenty of self-guided and well-marked trails to explore the flora, faunna and incredible mirador vistas that are all prevalent throughout the park. It's best is to book your tickets for the park well in advance as tickets can sellout during any season. You can purchase tickets online on the SINAC National Park website (be careful of fake sites). You will need to create a profile and provide passport details for all visitors to complete your ticket purchase. To discover the park in its entirety, you can purchase maps at the park entrance, however, we highly recommend you book the guided tour to Manuel Antonio National Park so that you can make the most out of this unforgettable visit.
Good to know:
-
The park is open from 7 AM to 4 PM Wednesday through Monday, and it's closed on Tuesdays.
-
Try to avoid unlicensed park guides who may aggressively try to sell you parking or a guided tour of the park.
-
You can't take any food or plastic (bags, bottles) inside the park.
Visit Nauyaca Waterfalls

Costa Rica has plenty of stunning waterfalls, but probably the most spectacular is Nauyaca Waterfall. Nauyaca features two massive cascades surrounded by lush rainforest and natural swimming pools.
What to know:
-
About 1 hour from Manuel Antonio by car
-
Two waterfalls totaling 61 meters (200 ft) tall
-
Large natural pools for swimming
-
Best enjoyed with a guided tour
Important: The rocks around the falls can be very slippery. A guided tour includes transportation, safety guidance, lunch, and local insights, making it the easiest and safest way to visit.

Hike the Reto Mae and enjoy the beautiful beaches of Manuel Antonio
When many think of hiking in Manuel Antonio, their minds go straight to the trails within the national park, which do require an entrance fee. But if you're looking for a free hike near Manuel Antonio, consider the Reto Mae trail!
It's not an overly lengthy hike for seasoned hikers, but it's no walk in the park either. The trail winds along the rugged Pacific coastline, with plenty of ups and downs as it meanders through the jungle.
Along this stunning coastline, you'll be treated to breathtaking views. At various points, the dense jungle gives way to panoramic vistas of the Pacific Ocean. As you trek, you'll encounter several small, secluded beaches such as Playa La Macha, Playa La Vaca, Playa Tulemar, and Playa Rocosa, as well as popular tourist spots like Playa Biesanz, Playa Playita, and finally Playa Espadilla.
Keep your eyes peeled, as you might be lucky enough to spot monkeys swinging through the trees, butterflies dancing among the flowers, squirrels, birds, and other wildlife along the way.

Visit Los Campesinos Ecolodge
One of our favorite hidden gems near Manuel Antonio is Los Campesinos Ecolodge. With hanging bridges, waterfalls, natural swimming pools, and peaceful rainforest trails, it offers an authentic Costa Rican experience away from the crowds. In our opinion, it's an even better value than Rainmaker Nature Park.
At just one hour from Manuel Antonio, Los Campesinos is the perfect day trip for nature lovers. Explore suspension bridges high above the jungle, swim beneath beautiful waterfalls, and enjoy incredible mountain views while supporting a local community-run eco-project. For an even more memorable experience, book the safari truck tour, which includes transportation, breakfast, lunch, and your guide for just $90 per person.
Top Experiences
-

In Quepos, don't miss the vibrant farmers' market held twice a week: Fridays (noon–8:30 PM) and Saturdays (6 AM–noon) next to the Malecon. Despite its size, it's a fantastic alternative to grocery shopping, offering a surprising variety of goods, from seafood to fresh coffee and cacao. It's also a treasure trove for unique gifts and artisanal finds, often more affordable than typical souvenirs.
Engage with locals and immerse yourself in the community vibe at the Quepos Farmers Market.
Catch a majestic Sunset
Sunsets are a must-see in Manuel Antonio and Quepos, offering a perfect way to unwind. Most hotels in Manuel Antonio provide stunning views of nearby mountains or beaches for sunset enjoyment. If your hotel lacks a view, head to Playa Espadilla Norte, where you might even encounter white-faced capuchin monkeys.

In Quepos, El Malecon, Parque Nahomi, La Marina Pez Vela or Bahia Azul offer unparalleled ocean views. Along El Malecon, you can find various seating options, and don't miss indulging in ice cream from Gelateria Amorosi at Marina Pez Vela while marveling at nature's beauty.
Best hotels in Manuel Antonio and Quepos: where to stay
• Quepos town: convenient for buses, everyday shops and local restaurants, with budget-friendly options. You’ll travel to the park and main beaches.
• Manuel Antonio hillside: a choice of ocean-view and jungle hotels near restaurants. Steep driveways and winding roads can make a short distance less walkable than it looks.
• Playa Espadilla and the park end: useful for beach time and an early park visit. Check the hotel’s actual distance to the entrance, bus stops and restaurants.

Do you need a car in Manuel Antonio?

Short answer: Not required, but it depends on your travel style.
Without a car:
-
Check the pickup arrangements for your chosen tour; inclusions and pickup locations vary.
-
The main road links Quepos, the park area and some beaches; a taxi may be needed for hillside hotels or places away from bus stops.
-
No need to worry about parking
With a car:
-
Freedom to visit places like Nauyaca Waterfalls, Los Campesinos, Dominical, and Uvita at your own pace
-
More flexibility for sunrise, sunset, and hidden beaches
-
Can save money if you're planning multiple day trips
Keep in mind: Parking in downtown Quepos is now paid in most areas, so parking costs can add up. If you plan to rent a car, we recommend choosing accommodations with free parking included.
For a short stay focused on the park and nearby beaches, a hotel with practical bus or taxi access can make a car unnecessary. For day trips, compare a rental car with transfers or tours, and check each destination’s access.
Is 4x4 Recommended?
A 4x4 is not usually needed for the main route between Quepos and Manuel Antonio. Hotel driveways and roads to rural attractions can be steep or unpaved. Ask your accommodation and activity provider about the exact route and current conditions, especially in rainy weather.
How to get around in Manuel Antonio without a car?
Scooters and ATVs
While biking is not practical in Manuel Antonio due to steep hills and narrow, winding roads, renting a scooter or ATV is a popular and adventurous way to get around. These are great for short distances between the beach, your hotel, and the national park. Several rental agencies in Manuel Antonio and Quepos offer scooters and ATVs at reasonable daily rates.
Public Buses
Public buses are the most budget-friendly way to get around Quepos and Manuel Antonio. Regular buses run between the town of Quepos and the beach area near the entrance to Manuel Antonio National Park, making it easy and affordable to move between the two. The bus ride takes about 15–20 minutes and costs under $1 USD.
Taxis
Taxis are readily available in both Quepos and Manuel Antonio. They are a convenient option for quick trips to the beach, restaurants, or hotels, especially if you’re not renting a vehicle. Be sure to ask the driver to use the meter (“¿Puede poner el maría, por favor?”) or agree on a fare before your ride. Some taxis also offer longer rides to nearby attractions.
Practical questions about Manuel Antonio and Quepos
Quepos is the main town and transport hub. Manuel Antonio is the hillside and beach area along the road toward the national park. Check the exact location of your accommodation rather than relying only on the destination name.
Three or four nights is a useful starting point if you want time for the park, beaches and another activity. Add time if your arrival or departure leaves only part of a day, or if you want a slower pace.
Consider Quepos town for bus connections, or a Manuel Antonio hotel close to a practical bus stop, restaurants or Playa Espadilla. Confirm the walking route with the property: steep access roads can make a nearby stop difficult to reach. Tour pickup is not automatic.
San José (SJO) is the international gateway for this route. Quepos (XQP) is the local airport for domestic flights. Compare the full journey, including flight connections, baggage rules and the transfer from Quepos airport to your hotel.
It depends on the product. Our Manuel Antonio guided wildlife tour lists the park entrance ticket as included; hotel transport depends on the selected option. Check your booking’s inclusions before buying a separate ticket. For an independent visit, arrange your own admission through the official park ticket system.
Consider Playa Espadilla outside the park, a mangrove excursion, a chocolate and coffee tour, or a walk around Quepos and Marina Pez Vela. Check availability, weather and sea conditions before setting out. Confirm the park’s current opening calendar before arranging the rest of your stay.
