Renting a car in Costa Rica

A rental car gives you the most freedom of any way to get around Costa Rica. The beaches, volcanoes, waterfalls, and national parks that make this country special are spread out, and having your own wheels means you travel on your schedule, stop when something catches your eye, and skip the waits that come with buses and shuttles.

It is also the part of trip planning that confuses travelers most. Between mandatory insurance, deposit rules, and questions about 4x4 vehicles, many visitors feel overwhelmed before they even land. This page breaks all of it down clearly, based on more than a decade of experience helping travelers here.

Pura Vida Traveling partners with Adobe Rent a Car, a Costa Rican-owned company we have trusted for years. Booking through our link gets you exclusive discounts plus free benefits that normally cost extra.

Why rent a car in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica rewards travelers who get off the main route. Hidden waterfalls, small beach towns, mountain lodges, and roadside sodas serving the best food you will eat all sit beyond the reach of public buses. A car puts them within reach.

Total flexibility

No timetables, no transfers, no waiting at terminals. Want to chase a sunrise at the volcano or linger over lunch in a beach town? With a car, the day is yours.

It is often the best choice for families and anyone who wants full control of the itinerary. Compare it with our shared and private shuttles if you would rather not drive.

Access to places buses never go

Public buses connect the big towns, but many of Costa Rica's best spots, from jungle lodges to remote beaches, require your own vehicle or an expensive taxi ride at each end. A rental car unlocks them.

GOOD TO KNOW: driving times in Costa Rica are longer than they look on the map. What takes 3.5 hours by car can take 5-6 hours by bus on indirect routes, so a car is not just more comfortable, it is often faster too.

Is a rental car right for your trip?

We are opinionated about this, because renting a car is not always the best answer. Here is our honest take.

Rent a car when...

  • You are visiting multiple destinations, like La Fortuna, Monteverde, and the beach
  • You are traveling with kids, surfboards, or lots of luggage
  • You want to explore remote beaches, waterfalls, or mountain towns
  • You are here during the rainy season and want to move between showers
  • You value freedom over saving every dollar
  • Skip the car when...

  • You are staying in one place the whole trip. A shuttle to and from the airport is simpler and often cheaper
  • You are on a tight budget. Public buses cost $1-15 per route and connect nearly every town
  • You are a solo traveler hopping the popular tourist routes. Shared shuttles run $40-75 per person and save you the driving
  • Your trip is short and city-based. Parking in San Jose and busy beach towns is a hassle you do not need
  • What a rental car actually costs

  • Compact car: roughly $30-50 per day
  • 4x4 vehicle: roughly $50-100+ per day
  • Mandatory liability insurance: included in Adobe's quote (most companies quote it separately)
  • Gas: approximately $4-5 per gallon
  • Credit card deposit hold: $1,000-1,500 with Adobe
  • Understanding rental car insurance

Insurance is where most rental car confusion in Costa Rica happens, and where some companies spring surprises at the counter. Here is how it works, plainly.

Mandatory liability insurance (cannot be declined)

Costa Rican law requires basic liability insurance on every rental car. All rental companies must charge for it, and you cannot decline it even if your credit card or travel insurance includes coverage. This is the charge that makes quotes look cheap elsewhere: many companies advertise a low daily rate and add the mandatory insurance at pickup.

Adobe includes this mandatory insurance in its quoted price. It appears as "Liability Protection" during online booking and in your reservation confirmation email. What you are quoted is what you pay.

Car Protection (CDW) — can be declined

Car Protection covers damage to the rental vehicle itself. You can decline it if your credit card includes Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) coverage that applies in Costa Rica.

To do that, you need a letter from your credit card company that includes your name, the last four digits of your card, and a statement confirming CDW coverage in Costa Rica. A quick call to your card's benefits department usually gets it, or you can request it through eclaimsline.com.

GOOD TO KNOW: request this letter before you leave home. Getting it from abroad at the rental counter is stressful, and without it you will be paying for Car Protection.

    Extended Protection

Adobe also offers Extended Protection, a more comprehensive option you can add when booking or at the rental counter. If you want zero stress about dings, scratches, or gravel-road pinstriping, it is worth considering.

Renting a car: requirements & practical details

These are the details travelers ask us about most. Get them right and pickup day is smooth.

    Age requirements

The general minimum age to rent a car in Costa Rica is often listed as 21, but Adobe requires drivers to be at least 23. There is no maximum age limit with Adobe or most companies, so senior drivers are fine. Other companies accept younger drivers, usually with an extra daily charge.

    Deposit: credit card only

All rental companies place a hold on your credit card to cover potential vehicle damage. Adobe's deposit is typically $1,000-1,500, and it must be a credit card. Debit cards are not accepted for the deposit. The hold is released when you return the car undamaged, but it can take several days to clear your account.

Be aware that some other companies require significantly higher deposits, sometimes $3,500 or more.

    Airport pickup: how it works

No rental company, Adobe included, has cars inside the San Jose (SJO) or Liberia (LIR) terminals. Offices are nearby instead. Here is the process: provide your flight details when you book, and an Adobe representative in a blue shirt will meet you outside the airport holding an Adobe sign. They take you to the office in a comfortable, air-conditioned shuttle just a few miles away, where you collect your car.

The arrivals area outside the airport can get busy and chaotic. If you do not spot the Adobe rep right away, ask other drivers, taxi services, or airport staff. They usually stand in the same area and can point them out.

There is no airport surcharge with Adobe. Some other companies and third-party booking sites add one, so always ask before confirming a reservation elsewhere.

    Delivery and pickup service

Adobe delivers or collects rental cars within a 12-mile (19 km) radius of their offices, free when you book through the Pura Vida Traveling link (this normally costs $30). It is especially handy if you arrive on a late flight or leave on an early one.

Returning the car before 8:30 am at Juan Santamaria Airport (SJO)? Adobe can arrange a drop at the airport parking lot for a $10 airport parking fee. Notify them in advance and they will give you the directions.

    Car seats and extras

Adobe has car seats and booster seats available for an extra per-day cost. Request them when you reserve online so they are waiting for you at pickup.

Need Wi-Fi on the road? You can rent a Wi-Fi hotspot from Adobe, or buy a local SIM card for your phone.

    Early and late pickups

Adobe typically allows late-night and early-morning pickups, but tell them your arrival time when you reserve so they can make arrangements. Always confirm after-hours service when booking.

Do you need a 4x4 in Costa Rica?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The honest answer depends entirely on where you are going and when.

You want a 4x4 if you are headed to:

  • Monteverde: the access roads are rough dirt, especially in rain
  • Nosara: unpaved roads much of the way in
  • San Gerardo de Dota: steep mountain roads
  • Uvita and Dominical: the roads leading up into the mountains require a 4x4
  • The Osa Peninsula and other remote areas
  • Anywhere off the main roads, or anywhere during the rainy season (May-November) when roads turn muddy and rough
  • A regular car is fine if:

  • You are sticking to major cities and well-paved highways
  • Your route follows the main tourist corridors in dry season
  • You are staying in towns like Manuel Antonio, Tamarindo, or Jaco that sit on paved roads
  • A 4x4 gives better traction and control on unpaved terrain, which makes the trip smoother and safer when conditions turn challenging. If your itinerary includes even a couple of the places in the first list, book the 4x4 and stop worrying about it.

Driving in Costa Rica: what to expect

Driving here is an adventure in the best sense, but a little local knowledge goes a long way.

    Navigation: use Waze

Costa Rica is famous for its lack of clear road signage. Directions are often given by landmarks, as in "100 meters past the Banco Nacional." Navigating San Jose can be particularly tricky.

We recommend Waze, the most widely used navigation app in the country, with the most up-to-date directions. Download offline maps while you are on Wi-Fi so GPS keeps working without signal. A local SIM card or a rented Wi-Fi hotspot from Adobe keeps you connected the rest of the time.

    Road conditions and timing

Distances look short on the map but take longer than expected. Mountain ranges, winding coastal roads, and rainforest terrain all slow you down. Plan on half a day (3-5 hours) for most travel days and avoid scheduling major activities on transfer days.

During the rainy season, heavy afternoon rain and mountain fog are common. Morning drives are more reliable, and river crossings on unpaved roads deserve respect. When in doubt, ask your hotel or a local whether the route is passable.

    Other things to know

  • Gas stations are plentiful on main routes but scarcer in remote areas; fill up before heading off the highway
  • Parking in busy beach towns can be tight; look for marked public lots rather than leaving the car on the street
  • Speed bumps ("tope") pop up unexpectedly, often near schools and small towns
  • Driving at night is best avoided in rural areas: unlit roads, pedestrians, cyclists, and animals

Why we partner with Adobe Rent a Car

Esteban, Pura Vida Traveling's founder, has more than 12 years of experience in Costa Rica and has seen the problems other agencies cause travelers. Adobe is the only rental company he recommends, and here is why.

Booking with Adobe also keeps your money in Costa Rica: every rental supports a locally-owned business and its nationwide team of Tico employees.

    Costa Rican-owned since 1990

Adobe is locally owned and operated, with 15 physical locations nationwide. That network matters in practice: if you have an accident or vehicle trouble, there is a local office nearby, which makes swapping your vehicle quick and convenient.

    No hidden fees

The most common complaint we hear is travelers booking a great-looking rate online, then getting hit with insurance and fees at the counter. Adobe does not do this. Mandatory liability insurance is included in the quote, and what you are quoted is what you pay.

    A fresh, versatile fleet

Adobe offers 15 different vehicle types, from compact cars for city driving to rugged SUVs for off-road trips, and refreshes its fleet every two years so the vehicles stay current.

Service and reviews that back it up

Friendly staff, easy booking, and flexible pickup and drop-off options make renting with Adobe straightforward from start to finish. Their reviews across Costa Rica back this up, and their reputation for customer service is exactly why we partner with them.

    Your exclusive PVT benefits

    Frequently Asked Questions

Costa Rica requires basic liability insurance on all rental cars by law. Every rental company must charge for it and it cannot be declined, even with other coverage. Adobe includes it in its quoted price as "Liability Protection," while many other companies add it at the counter on top of a low advertised rate.
