Nosara
Costa Rica Travel Guide

Quick Travel Summary - Start Here
Nosara is easily one of my favorite Costa Rican destinations however, visitors should note that when we talk about Nosara, we are normally referencing the beach areas of Playa Guiones and Playa Pelada.
The laid-back bohemian vibe in this area is infectious. Playa Guiones and Playa Pleada are gorgeous beaches and a paradise for surfers and yogis alike. Nosara is one of my favorite spots for a surf lesson or a yoga retreat
Nestled in the heart of Costa Rica's Blue Zone, Nosara is a truly special destination where the secrets to longevity and a healthy lifestyle are woven into the very fabric of the community. The local culture is deeply intertwined with nature, offering a plethora of outdoor activities like surfing the renowned waves of Playa Guiones, practicing yoga in world-class studios, cold plunging in ice baths, and exploring the biodiverse wildlife sanctuaries.

Nosara
Nosara is perfect for surfers, yogis, and wellness seekers, as well as nature lovers and families looking for a laid-back beach destination away from the crowds.
Where is Nosara?
Nosara is located on Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula, in the Guanacaste province on the Pacific coast. It sits in the heart of Costa Rica's Blue Zone, one of the unique regions of the world where people live significantly longer, healthier lives, and it's known for its consistent surf, world-class yoga studios, and strong focus on sustainability.
One thing that surprises many first-time visitors: when we talk about Nosara, we normally mean the beach areas of Playa Guiones and Playa Pelada rather than the small inland town of Nosara itself. Playa Pelada sits just north of Playa Guiones, and the Ostional Wildlife Refuge, famous for its olive ridley sea turtle arribadas, is around 15 minutes north.
Travel Times
From Liberia (LIR): Approximately 2.5–3.5 hours by car or private shuttle (about 110 km), 3–4 hours by shared shuttle, or about 30 minutes by domestic flight

Best International Airport to Fly Into:

The best international airport to fly into to access Nosara is Liberia International Airport (LIR). It is located in the Guanacaste province and is approximately a 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Nosara.
Best Domestic Airport to Fly Into:
-
Another option is to fly into the domestic Nosara Airport (NOB), also known as Nosara Regional Airport or Aeropuerto de Nosara. This airport is closer to Nosara, significantly reducing travel time from the airport to your destination.
Is 4x4 Recommended?
-
A 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended, especially during the rainy season (May to November) when roads can become muddy and challenging to navigate. Even during the dry season, some roads leading to Nosara may be unpaved and rough.
Private and Shared Shuttles:
-
Both private and shared shuttle services are available from almost all popular cities in Costa Rica. These shuttles offer a convenient and comfortable way to reach your destination without worrying about driving or navigating unfamiliar roads. Shared shuttles are a cost-effective option, typically following a set schedule and combining travelers heading in the same direction.
How many days do you need in Nosara?
1 day
If you're short on time, spend the morning surfing or relaxing on Playa Guiones, then head to Playa Pelada to explore the tide pools and catch the sunset over dinner at La Luna or El Chivo. Since Nosara takes a few hours to reach from either international airport, one day only gives you a small taste of its laid-back rhythm.
2 days
With two days, you can add a surf lesson or yoga class and one guided experience, such as the Sunset Horseback Riding Tour, ocean kayaking and snorkeling at Isla Rosada, or an ATV tour through the jungle. You'll also have time to enjoy both Playa Guiones and Playa Pelada at a more relaxed pace.
3 days (recommended)
Three days is a great amount of time for most travelers. You'll have time for a surf lesson, a yoga class, the tide pools at Playa Pelada, and an adventure like the Pilas Blancas ATV Waterfall Tour or a sunset horseback ride, while still leaving room to slow down and soak up Nosara's laid-back vibe.
4-5 days
With four or five days, you can truly settle into Nosara's relaxed pace. Add more surf or yoga sessions, hike the trails of the Nosara Biological Reserve, browse the boutique shops, and visit the Tuesday Organic Farmers Market. You can also plan an evening at the Ostional Wildlife Refuge to witness a turtle arribada, at its biggest from July to December.
Nosara's charm lies in its relaxed pace. Between surf lessons, yoga classes, tide pools, sunsets, jungle adventures, and turtle nesting at nearby Ostional, it's easy to fill several days, and if you're coming for a yoga retreat or a series of surf lessons, a week or more is perfect.
Our recommendation: We suggest spending 3 to 5 days in Nosara. This gives you enough time to enjoy the highlights, like surfing at Playa Guiones, yoga classes, and sunsets at Playa Pelada, without feeling rushed. Because getting to Nosara takes a few hours from either international airport, plan your arrival and departure days as travel days. Tips for visiting Nosara

Fly into Liberia if you're driving
Nosara is closer to Liberia (LIR) than to San José, and the drive from San José is longer and usually includes a ferry crossing. If you'd rather fly domestically to Nosara Airport (NOB), San José has the most domestic flights, but keep in mind that baggage limits on these small planes are strict.

Rent a 4x4 if you plan to drive
Roads in and around Nosara can be unpaved and bumpy, and during the rainy season (May to November) they can become muddy and challenging. A 4x4 makes the drive much easier, and Waze usually has the most up-to-date road conditions.

Plan around the turtle arribadas
Olive ridley turtles nest en masse (arribadas) at the Ostional Wildlife Refuge all year. The biggest arribadas come in the rainy season, from July to December, peaking in September and October; from December to June they still happen almost every month, over 2 to 3 days, but are smaller (usually tens of thousands of turtles). You must visit with a guide, wear dark clothing, and avoid flashlights and flash photography.

Check the tide before visiting Playa Pelada
The tide pools at Playa Pelada are best enjoyed at low tide, when the clear, warm pools are perfect for a refreshing dip. Bring a mask and snorkel if you have one to spot small fish, crabs, and colorful sea anemones.

Check local Facebook groups for yoga and events
Some yoga studios and beach groups offer free or donation-based community classes, so check local Facebook groups or community boards for updated schedules. The "Nosara Timeout" Facebook group is a great way to find out what events are happening during your stay.

Things to do: Top Attractions in Nosara
Visit the Ostional Wildlife Refuge to witness the incredible "arribadas"

GOOD TO KNOW
-
Best time of year to see these "arribadas" is August through December.
-
Turtles prefer to nest in the dark so it’s best to go during the waxing crescent moon or right after the new moon when it is the darkest.
-
The best time to see turtles in Ostional is during sunset around 5 PM and early morning around 5 AM. It’s common for babies to hatch early in the morning.
The Ostional Wildlife Refuge in Costa Rica was established in 1984 to protect a crucial nesting site for olive ridley sea turtles. The Reserve extends 15 km along the shoreline, including the beaches of Ostional, Nosara, and Guiones. Olive ridley sea turtles, along with their close relatives, Kemp’s sea turtles, are unique in their synchronized mass nesting events known as "arribadas." Before these mass nestings, known as "flotillas," a growing number of turtles gather offshore. Then, triggered by an unknown signal, the arribada begins. Initially, a few hundred turtles come ashore, followed by a continuous stream for three to seven days.
Turtles nest at Ostional year-round, with peak nesting during the rainy season from August to December, when arribadas occur regularly, sometimes even twice a month. During this time, hundreds of thousands of turtles come to nest, compared to tens of thousands during the dry season. These arribadas usually happen on the darkest nights, a few days before the new moon, mostly between 8 pm and 4 am. Typically, turtles ride the high tide at night, but during an arribada, they start arriving soon after sunset and continue until early morning.
At night, when there is an arribada, you must check in with the ranger booth at the southern end of Ostional where you pay the entrance fee of $ 10. No flashlights or flash photography is permitted.
