Nestled along the pristine coastline of Costa Rica's Puntarenas Province, Uvita is a charming town I frequently visit. Known for its unspoiled beaches, lush rainforests, and the iconic whale-tail-shaped sandbar of Marino Ballena National Park, Uvita perfectly blends natural beauty with vibrant biodiversity. The area is famous for Envision, one of my favorite music and art festivals, and features some of Costa Rica’s best hidden river and waterfall spots. If you're a fan of chasing waterfalls and savoring delicious food, this is the place to be, with some of my top restaurant picks located here.

Puntarenas

Uvita

Uvita is perfect for nature lovers, couples, families, and surfers looking for a quiet, laid-back escape with whale watching, waterfalls, beautiful beaches, and fewer crowds.

Where is Uvita?

Uvita is located on Costa Rica's South Pacific Coast, in the province of Puntarenas, about 222 km (138 miles) from San José. This laid-back beach town is best known for Marino Ballena National Park, Costa Rica's first marine national park, home to the famous Whale's Tail sandbar and one of the best places in the country for whale watching.

Uvita is a small town spread out over a large area, with its center near the Costanera Sur highway (Route 34). The beaches of Marino Ballena National Park are just minutes from the town center, the Uvita Waterfall is about a 10-minute drive away, and the neighboring towns of Ojochal (about 15 minutes) and Dominical (about 20 minutes) are easy to reach. The area is also known for Envision Festival, typically held in late February or early March.

Travel Times

  • From San José (SJO): Approximately 3–4 hours by car or shuttle

  • From Liberia (LIR): Approximately 5–6 hours by car

  • From Manuel Antonio & Quepos: About 1 hour

  • From Dominical: About 20 minutes

  • From Sierpe (gateway to Drake Bay): About 1 hour by shuttle

  • From Monteverde: Approximately 4–5 hours

  • From Tamarindo: Approximately 6 hours

Best International Airport to Fly Into

The closest and most convenient international airport for reaching Uvita is Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), located in San José. This airport offers various international flights from North America, Europe, and other parts of the world. From SJO, it takes approximately 3 to 4 hours by car to reach Uvita.

Alternative Option: Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia is another option, but it’s further from Uvita, requiring a 5 to 6-hour drive. This option is ideal if you visit Guanacaste before heading to Uvita.

Best Domestic Airport to Fly Into

For travelers already in Costa Rica, the nearest domestic airport to Uvita is Palmar Sur Airport (PMZ), located about an hour's drive south of Uvita. Sansa Airlines offers direct domestic flights from San José to Palmar Sur, saving you time compared to driving.

Tip: The flight from San José to Palmar Sur is only about 45 minutes and provides stunning aerial views of Costa Rica’s diverse landscapes.

Main Connecting Highways for Driving from the Airport

From San José (SJO):

Take Route 27 (Autopista del Sol), heading west towards Orotina, then connect to Route 34 (Costanera Sur), which takes you directly down the Pacific coast to Uvita. This route offers scenic ocean views and well-paved roads.

From Liberia (LIR):

Travel south on Route 1 (Interamericana Norte), then connect to Route 18. From there, merge onto Route 27 and finally Route 34, leading you to Uvita. It’s a longer drive, but it takes you through Costa Rica’s beautiful countryside.

Is 4x4 Recommended?

While 4x4 vehicles are not strictly necessary when traveling to Uvita on the main roads, they are highly recommended during the rainy season (May to November). The region’s rural roads can become muddy or rough, especially if you plan to visit more remote locations, like hidden beaches or waterfalls. A standard vehicle will suffice if you’re traveling during the dry season (December to April) and sticking to the main roads.

Private Shuttles Available

Several private shuttle services operate from San José and Liberia to Uvita, providing a convenient and comfortable way to reach your destination. Shuttles can be pre-booked and often offer door-to-door service, making your trip stress-free.

How many days do you need in Uvita?

1 day

If you're short on time, visit Marino Ballena National Park, walk out on the Whale's Tail at low tide, and cool off at the Uvita Waterfall in the afternoon. You'll see Uvita's highlights, but one day isn't enough to fully enjoy the area.

2 days

With two days, you'll have time to explore Marino Ballena National Park and the Uvita Waterfall, plus one additional activity such as a whale and dolphin watching tour, a snorkeling trip to Caño Island, or a surf session at Playa Hermosa.

3 days (recommended)

Three days is the ideal amount of time for most travelers. You'll have time for the national park and a boat tour, a day trip to Nauyaca Waterfalls, and a morning at Mercado Bahía Ballena, while still enjoying a sunset on the beach.

4-5 days

With four or five days, you can enjoy Uvita at a relaxed pace. Add a waterfall rappelling or kayak tour, explore hidden river spots like Bamboo River and Pozo Azul, and spend time in nearby Dominical and Ojochal, from Dominical's Friday Eco-feria to dinner in Ojochal.

Uvita is the kind of laid-back place where you could easily stay for weeks. Between the national park, whale and dolphin tours, rivers and waterfalls, and the nearby towns of Dominical and Ojochal, it's easy to fill several days.

Our recommendation: We suggest spending at least three full days in Uvita, which usually means staying 3 or 4 nights, depending on your arrival and departure times. If you're visiting during whale season (December to April or July to November), be sure to save a morning for a whale-watching tour.

Tips for visiting Uvita

car-rental.png

Plan your visit around low tide

You can only walk out on the Whale's Tail sandbar at low tide, and reaching the end takes about 20–30 minutes. The park closes at 5 PM, so check the tide schedule before you go, and ask park rangers for the latest information, as tides change quickly.

booking.png

Come during whale season

Humpback whales visit Marino Ballena National Park twice a year: from December to April (peak January to March), whales from the Northern Hemisphere, often with calves swimming alongside their mothers; and from July to November (peak August to October), whales from the Southern Hemisphere that come to mate and give birth. Dolphins can be spotted year-round. Choose a morning tour, when the sea is usually calmer.

early.png

Be careful at rivers and waterfalls

Rocks can be very slippery, and the water can be powerful in the rainy season. Never visit the waterfalls alone, and if you want to cliff jump at bigger falls like Nauyaca, go with a guide.

hamster.png

Never leave valuables unattended

Thieves are known to target parked cars while visitors enjoy the waterfalls, and belongings left alone on the beach can disappear. Leave nothing in your car and keep your things close while you swim.

position.png

Stay close to the beach if you don't have a car

Uvita is spread out, so if you're not renting a car, book accommodation close to the beach or a waterfall. Renting a scooter or bike makes it easy to reach the rest.

Things to do: Top Attractions in Uvita

Swim and play in rivers and waterfalls

light

GOOD TO KNOW

  • Use caucion when visiting these waterfalls in rainy season and if the water is powerful, don't get too close.

  • Never visit these waterfalls alone. Many people die at these waterfalls becuase they dont respect the power and pull of the waterfall.

  • If you drive to one of these sites, don't leave anything in your car as theves have been known to pray on cars while tourist enjoy the waterfalls

My favorite activity in Uvita is exploring its stunning rivers and waterfalls. The rivers here are crystal-clear, turquoise, and wonderfully cool. Uvita offers various rivers and hidden waterfall pools—some accessible by foot from the town center, while others require a 4x4 vehicle. For safety, consider joining a full-day waterfall tour, but if you're adventurous, you can explore on your own. Just be cautious, as the waterfalls can be very slippery and dangerous, especially during the rainy season. Here are a few of my favorite river spots in Uvita:

Uvita Waterfall ($5)

The Uvita Waterfall, easily accessible from the town center, is a charming natural retreat where visitors can enjoy a refreshing swim in the clear pool at the base of the falls. The waterfall features multiple cliff-jumping platforms as well as a natural rock slide that adds a fun, adventurous twist to your visit. Surrounded by lush vegetation, this picturesque spot is perfect for relaxing and reconnecting with nature. The restaurant's entrance will charge you $5 but gives you access to their man-made platforms that make it easy to navigate and cliff jump.

Bamboo river (free)

Tucked away in a serene bamboo forest, the Bamboo River is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. The tranquil setting, coupled with the soothing sound of cascading water, creates a peaceful atmosphere ideal for a quiet escape. This secluded spot offers a unique and intimate experience, making it a favorite for those looking to enjoy nature’s beauty in solitude.

El Pavon (free)

El Pavon Waterfall is a captivating natural wonder where a powerful stream flows through a giant boulder, creating a unique and picturesque cascade. Located in the heart of the jungle, this waterfall is perfect for a day of adventure, allowing visitors to swim in the cool waters and explore the surrounding flora and fauna. El Pavon’s striking landscape makes it a must-see for nature enthusiasts.

Pozo Azul Waterfall (free)

Pozo Azul Waterfall, known for its strikingly blue waters, is an idyllic spot for swimming and relaxing. Nestled in a lush forest, the waterfall flows into a large, inviting pool that’s perfect for cooling off after a hike. The pristine environment and vibrant blue hues of Pozo Azul make it a favorite destination for photographers and nature lovers alike.

Hidden Waterfall and Natural Pools (free)

You will find this gorgeous hidden waterfall and natural pools just a bit further outside the town of Uvita. This spot is best to visit in the rainy season when there is more water and bigger swimming pools. Getting to this spot requires crossing the river on foot or in a 4x4. The river crossing is a good place to park if you don't want to cross with a car.

Visit Nauyaca Waterfalls

Nauyaca waterfall2.jpeg

Nauyaca is one of the most impressive waterfalls in Costa Rica and should be a stop on anyone’s list when visiting Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast. Our Nauyaca Waterfall tour includes a nice hike to the top tier of this epic 150 ft waterfall, which will then reward you with a refreshing swim in the pool beneath the lower falls. If you are adventurous and want to jump from the waterfall, we recommend visiting with a tour provider who will be insured and assist you in climbing.

Do you need a car in Uvita?

buy a car costa rica.jpg

Short answer: Not required, but highly recommended.

Without a car:

  • Public buses run along the Costanera (Route 34) and connect Uvita with Dominical, Ojochal, and San Isidro, though they may not run late at night

  • Taxis are available for short trips; most aren't metered, so agree on a price before you go

  • Renting a scooter or bike is a fun way to reach nearby beaches, shops, and restaurants

With a car:

  • Freedom to visit Nauyaca Waterfalls, hidden rivers, and remote beaches at your own pace

  • Much easier to get between spread-out hotels, restaurants, and attractions

  • Simple day trips to Dominical, Ojochal, or Manuel Antonio along Route 34

Keep in mind: Thieves have been known to target parked cars at the waterfalls, so never leave anything in your car. If you'd rather rent locally, Adobe Rent a Car has an office in Uvita.

Best option: If you're staying near the beach and mostly visiting Marino Ballena National Park, the Uvita Waterfall, and boat tours, you can get by with taxis, a scooter, or a bike. If you want to explore Nauyaca Waterfalls, hidden rivers, and nearby towns like Dominical and Ojochal, renting a car is well worth it.

Is 4x4 Recommended?

A 4x4 is not necessary to reach Uvita, as the main highway is well paved, and a standard car is fine in the dry season (December to April) if you stick to the main roads. However, a 4x4 is highly recommended in the rainy season (May to November) or if you plan to visit remote beaches, waterfalls, or some inland hotels, where rural roads can get muddy or rough.

How to get around in Uvita?

Getting around can be challenging once you’ve arrived in Uvita because most attractions, hotels, and restaurants are spread out. How you get around will depend on your preferences and travel needs, but to get the most out of the area,  we recommend renting a bike or scooter if you don't have a car. Here’s a breakdown of the most common transportation options available in the area.

Public Transportation

Public buses are available in Uvita, connecting the town to nearby destinations such as Dominical, Ojochal, and San Isidro. While these buses are inexpensive, they may not be the most convenient option for travelers looking to explore more remote attractions or travel on a tight schedule. Buses run along the Costanera Highway (Route 34), making stops in central locations.

  • Cost: Very affordable, usually between ₡500 to ₡2000 CRC ($1-$4 USD).

  • Note: Buses are generally reliable but may not operate late at night.

Bike or Scooter

Renting a bike or scooter can be an eco-friendly and fun way to explore Uvita and its surrounding areas. Scooters, in particular, offer a convenient way to visit nearby beaches, shops, and restaurants. Many rental shops in Uvita offer daily or weekly rentals, making it a flexible option for those who prefer a bit more freedom than walking or public transportation.

Cost: Scooters typically rent for **$20 to $30 USD** per day, while bicycles are cheaper at **$10 to $15 USD** per day.

  • Note: Uvita’s roads can be hilly, so scooters might be a more practical option for longer trips.

Taxi

Taxis are available throughout Uvita and are a convenient way to travel short distances or between towns. Most taxis in the area are not metered, so agreeing on a price before starting your trip is recommended. Taxis can be called for pick-up or found at popular spots such as the Uvita Bus Terminal.

  • Cost: Prices vary depending on distance; short trips within Uvita typically range from ₡3000 to ₡5000 CRC ($5-$10 USD).

  • Note: Having cash on hand is helpful, as not all taxis accept credit cards.

Rental Car

Renting a car is one of the most popular options for travelers who want flexibility in exploring Uvita and the surrounding areas. Many visitors rent vehicles from San José (SJO) Airport or locally in Uvita. Having a car gives you the freedom to visit nearby attractions like Nauyaca Waterfalls, Ballena National Park, and other remote beaches. Adobe Rent a Car has an office in Uvita and is our recommended Car Rental Agency.

  • Cost: Rental prices vary but typically range from $40 to $80 USD per day, depending on the car model and insurance.

No matter which transportation method you choose, Uvita is small enough to explore, but having flexibility with taxis or a rental car can enhance your ability to reach more remote spots and hidden gems.
