Domestic flights in Costa Rica

When Flying Beats Driving (and When It Doesn't)

We will be straight with you: a domestic flight is sometimes the best money you spend on your trip, and sometimes it is unnecessary.

Fly when...

  • You have limited vacation days and half-day drives would eat your itinerary
  • You are going to Tortuguero, Drake Bay, Puerto Jimenez, or the Osa Peninsula, where flights save the most time
  • You are connecting distant regions, like San Jose to the Osa, or Liberia to Cobano
  • You want the scenic flight itself; the views of volcanoes and coastline are genuinely spectacular
  • Skip the flight when...

  • You are staying in one or two destinations close together, like Manuel Antonio and Jaco
  • You are a couple or family that wants a rental car anyway; the car pays for itself across a week
  • You are on a tight budget: buses and shuttles cover the popular routes for a fraction of the fare
  • You have lots of luggage. The 30 lb checked limit is real, and overweight charges add up at $1.50 per pound
  • The hybrid strategy

Many travelers fly one leg and drive or shuttle the rest. Fly into Puerto Jimenez or Drake Bay, then shuttle back along the coast. Or take the early flight to Tamarindo and a shared shuttle back. It gives you the time savings where it counts without paying to fly every leg.

    Domestic flights in Costa Rica

Costa Rica looks small on the map, but driving from one coast to the other can take 5-7 hours on winding mountain roads. A domestic flight does it in under an hour, and the views of volcanoes, jungle, and coastline from the window are worth the price of the ticket on their own.

We offer domestic flights across Costa Rica in partnership with Sansa Airlines, the country's leading domestic airline. Sansa flies to 13 destinations from San Jose, from Quepos and Tamarindo to Tortuguero and the Osa Peninsula, mostly on Cessna Grand Caravan planes.

This page covers where you can fly, what it costs, baggage rules, and when flying genuinely beats driving.

Why take a domestic flight in Costa Rica?

Flights are the fastest way to cover long distances in Costa Rica, and on certain routes they are not even close.

You save half a day of travel

A flight from San Jose to a beach destination takes 30-60 minutes. The same trip by car or shuttle often takes 4-6 hours. If you have limited vacation days, a flight can turn a lost transfer day into an afternoon on the beach.

Some places are far easier by air

Drake Bay, Puerto Jimenez, and Tortuguero are slow, complicated drives. Flying drops you minutes from lodges and national parks that would otherwise eat a full day each way. Tortuguero in particular has no road access at all, so it is a flight or a boat-and-shuttle combination.

    Safe, reliable, and scenic

Sansa has operated safely for over 40 years and is known for on-time performance. The Cessna Grand Caravans fly low enough that the flight doubles as a sightseeing tour: volcanoes, coastlines, and rainforest the whole way.

GOOD TO KNOW: flights are the fastest option but rarely the cheapest. If budget beats time for you, compare with our public bus guide or shuttle routes before booking.

Where you can fly in Costa Rica

Sansa connects San Jose (SJO) with 13 airports and destinations. Most flights depart from the Sansa terminal right next to SJO International.

    Destinations

  • Quepos - Manuel Antonio (XQP): the closest airport to Manuel Antonio National Park
  • La Fortuna - Arenal (FON): skip the 3-hour drive to the volcano
  • Tamarindo (TNO): Guanacaste's surf and beach hub
  • Nosara (NOB): yoga and surf town on the Nicoya Peninsula
  • Cobano (ACO): serving Montezuma, Santa Teresa, and Samara
  • Liberia (LIR): gateway to Guanacaste
  • Tortuguero (TTQ): the Caribbean canals, no roads required
  • Limon (LIO): the South Caribbean and Puerto Viejo area
  • Puerto Jimenez (PJM): the Osa Peninsula and Corcovado
  • Drake Bay (DRK): Corcovado's other gateway
  • Golfito (GLF): the southern Pacific coast
  • Bocas del Toro, Panama (BOC): cross-border hop to the Caribbean archipelago
  • Managua, Nicaragua (MGA): international connection to the north
  • Private charters

Beyond the scheduled routes, we also arrange private charter flights to any destination, including places Sansa's schedule does not cover. Charters run roughly $1,400-2,600 per plane depending on destination (tax not included), and they depart on your schedule. Contact us with your dates and group size for options.

    Popular routes & prices

Here is a representative sample of one-way domestic flight prices (tax not included). Prices vary by date, availability, and season.

    Sample one-way fares

  • San Jose (SJO) ↔ Quepos / Manuel Antonio (XQP): from $115
  • San Jose (SJO) ↔ La Fortuna (FON): from $115
  • San Jose (SJO) ↔ Tortuguero (TTQ): from $130
  • San Jose (SJO) ↔ Limon (LIO): from $130
  • San Jose (SJO) ↔ Nosara (NOB): from $140
  • Liberia (LIR) ↔ Cobano (ACO): from $143
  • San Jose (SJO) ↔ Puerto Jimenez (PJM): from $149-156
  • San Jose (SJO) ↔ Golfito (GLF): from $155
  • San Jose (SJO) ↔ Drake Bay (DRK): from $155
  • San Jose (SJO) ↔ Tamarindo (TNO): from $155
  • San Jose (SJO) ↔ Cobano (ACO, for Santa Teresa / Montezuma): from $120
  • How flights compare with driving

At $115-156 one way, a flight costs more than a shared shuttle ($40-90 per person on most routes) but saves hours. For a couple or family, a rental car often wins on cost over multiple days, especially if you want the car anyway. The flight wins when you have limited days or a distant, awkward destination.

One example: driving from San Jose to Puerto Jimenez or Drake Bay takes most of a day. The flight takes under an hour and lands you at the gateway to Corcovado.

    Baggage: what you can bring

These are small planes, so baggage rules are strict and enforced. Plan for them when packing.

    Checked baggage

On Cessna Grand Caravan flights, each passenger gets one piece of checked baggage included, up to 30 lbs / 14 kg and 45 inches / 114 cm (length + height + width combined).

  • Extra weight: $1.50 per additional pound
  • Baggage allowance may vary on Sansa promotional fares, per each fare's policies
  • If there is no space on your flight, luggage is sent on the next available flight and delivered to the destination airport only
  • Carry-on

One piece of hand luggage up to 10 lbs / 4.5 kg and 20 inches / 50 cm. In addition, at no extra cost, each passenger may carry a woman's handbag, reading material, infant food, a coat or blanket, a camera or binoculars, or a laptop.

With limited cabin space, you may be asked to check your bag at the gate.

    Surfboards and sports equipment

  • Surfboards: $40 per way plus tax, one per passenger, maximum 6.7 ft long, in a proper case with fins removed. Boards are not part of the baggage allowance and fly subject to space
  • Other sports gear (golf, diving, fishing, bikes) travels as checked baggage and may carry oversize or overweight charges, subject to space. Bicycles must be in a case (107 x 107 x 60 cm) with tires deflated
  • No clothing or other items packed inside board and equipment cases, and damaged packages or damaged boards are not accepted
  • Pets and children

  • Dogs and cats: $52 each way, in a secure kennel, up to 40 kg, subject to space. A vaccination card or visible good health is required
  • Children under 2 fly free on an adult's lap, with no seat and no baggage allowance. Every infant needs a ticket to board, and a folding baby seat may be allowed if cabin space permits
  • Children under 12 must travel with a parent or carry a signed authorization letter to fly with another adult
  • Booking, changes & practical details

Simple logistics, but the details matter on small aircraft.

    How far ahead to book

Book at least 5 days in advance to secure your preferred schedule. In peak season (December-April and holidays), 10-15 days ahead is strongly recommended, as small planes and limited schedules sell out.

    When to arrive

Arrive at the Sansa Domestic Terminal, right next to SJO International Airport, at least 1 hour before your flight. At other domestic airports, arrive 45-60 minutes before departure.

    Changes and cancellations

Sansa tickets are nonrefundable in any situation. Changes carry penalties:

  • More than 10 days before the flight: $30 penalty
  • Between 72 hours and 10 days before: $50 per passenger, per change
  • Within 72 hours of departure: changes are not allowed
  • These conditions apply to all Sansa fares. To modify a booking made with us, email support@puravidatraveling.com and we will work with the airline, subject to availability and fees.

Private charters have their own policy: 33+ days before, 20% penalty; 14-30 days before, 60%; under 14 days, 100%.

Getting to and from the airport

We can arrange private or shared shuttles to match your flight times, whether that is SJO, Liberia, or a small airstrip. Just ask when you book.

Are domestic flights in Costa Rica safe?

Yes. Sansa Airlines is ICAO-certified and has operated safely for over 40 years. The Cessna Grand Caravan is a workhorse aircraft used across Central America for exactly this kind of short-hop flying, and Sansa is known for on-time performance and solid local service.

Weather matters more than it does on big jets. Fog in the mountains and afternoon rain can delay or, occasionally, cancel flights, especially in the green season. Schedule morning flights where you can, and build a little buffer into tight connections. Outside of bad weather, flights generally run on time.
