How to get from San Jose to Liberia Costa Rica by public bus

To Liberia from San Jose by public bus

Cost-effective - 4-6hrs - $14 US - 211 kilometers

You can choose to take the bus from San Jose, Costa Rica, to Liberia. In fact, taking a public bus is the most economical way to travel from San Jose to Liberia. The bus ride from San José Airport to Liberia takes about 4-6 hours, with several departures daily from the Pulmitan de Liberia bus station in San José. The cost is very affordable, typically around $10-$15 USD per person. While buses are not as comfortable as other options, they are a great way to travel on a budget and experience local culture. Be sure to check the schedule in advance and arrive early to secure a seat. These buses also pass the SJO airport in Alajuela to pick up passengers. They will stop at the bus pickup area in front of the airport. Always double-check with the driver when you get on.

Direct and non-direct buses depart from the Pulmitan bus terminal in San Jose, serving Liberia.

Here is the most current schedule we could find online: 6:00 AM, 7:15 AM, 9:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 12:00 PM (directo), 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM (Playas del Coco), 3:00 PM, 4:00 PM (Playas del Coco), 5:00 PM (directo), 6:00 PM.

*Directo buses are about 1/2 hour shorter.

*Non-direct buses pass the SJO airport in Alajuela.

*Playa del Coco buses pass through Liberia on their way to Playa del Coco

Buses from San Jose to Liberia usually pass the airport and pick up passengers, but if you want to play it safe, you should go to the bus terminal to catch the bus.

When you land at San Jose Airport, you're not quite in San Jose yet; the airport is in a nearby town called Alajuela. That said, the bus you need to take to get to Liberia departs from the Pulmitan de Liberia bus station, which is in the city of San Jose. So, you will have to commute from the airport to get there.

To get to the Pulmitan de Liberia bus station in San José, you can either take a local bus from the airport, a taxi, or an Uber. We recommend taking an Uber; it's more cost-effective than a taxi (which can cost you $15-20 more) and much easier than taking the bus after a day of flying. An Uber will usually cost less than $15.

If you decide to take a local bus to Pulmitan de Liberia bus station, you will need to find the bus stop (which is on the street below the terminal as you leave the airport) and board the correct bus. You will need to ask the driver if they are heading to San Jose to ensure you get on the correct bus. You can pay the bus driver directly in colones or USD; the fare is about 665 colones. The drive to San Jose will take approximately 30-45 minutes. However, when you get off the bus, you won't be at the Pulmitan de Liberia bus station, and you'll probably want to take an Uber if you have luggage. Taking an Uber directly from the airport will save you time and hassle for a slightly higher cost. Depending on traffic, it will take around 25-45 minutes and drop you off at the Pulmitan de Liberia bus station.

Best for extended visit - Purchase and resell

If you are planning an extended visit to Costa Rica and want to travel the entire country in the comfort of a private vehicle, consider buying a car or van upon arrival and selling it when you leave. Buying a vehicle is both legal for tourists and relatively easy. You would have to pay the initial lawyer's fees to transfer ownership, and then sell the vehicle before leaving the country. But this hassle could be worth it if you can get most of your investment back before you leave.
